Sanguis Bossman Syrah No sophomore slump for Matthias Pippig. His 2005's are as fine as his highly touted inaugural releases in 2004. Sourced from the Bien Nacido, Westerly, Watch Hill, and Thompson vineyards, the Bossman is the second release from this Syrah specialist. This is a big, bold, black fruit beauty that requires a little aeration to release its aromatics. Not much available with a 130 case production. RP 93 pts. | $75.00 | |
Sanguis The Optimist Syrah Matthias Pippig had been the manager @ La Brea Bakery (Manfred Krankl of Sine Qua Non is a principal there) before he was hit with the winemaking bug. He has taken a few pages from the Krankl book, sourcing from great vineyards and making highly stylized, small production wines. But Pippig is his own man and his wines stand up on their own. Last year was the first release and 2004 Last Dance and The Wedding Syrahs were outstanding. Robert Parker conservatively rated them 92 and 90 points respectively, but later upgraded them to 94 and 93 pts. With The Optimist, Pippig is sourcing from the Westerly, Watch, and Thompson Vineyards. This beauty is 97% Syrah and 3% Viognier. Plums and red fruits on the nose, with black fruits, mocha, and graphite predominating on the palate. This is a big, rich wine that is an excellent follow-up to the 2004's and Pippig's original label art makes for extremely attractive packaging. 275 case production. RP 91 pts.

Big Basin Mandala Syrah This is a new one from Bradley Brown, who blended from various Rattlesnake Rock barrels and added in a bit of fruit from the Santa Lucia Highlands. | 2004 | Jus Soli Sonoma Valley Syrah Rhone Ranger cognescenti were unfamilar with Jus Soli at the Rhone Ranger tasting on Saturday since this was a first release for them. | 2004 | Trinafour Niemi Vineyard Mendocino Co Petite Sirah This is a small project of Alex McGregor, the winemaker @ Saracina. This wine has delicious blackberry fruit with hints of lilacs to go with a nice length and grip. If you are patiently waiting for some of your cellared Petite Sirahs to shed their tannins, this is the wine you should turn to for current consumption as it is drinking beautifully now. 10% off on case orders.

Arnot-Roberts Hudson Vineyards Syrah The latest release from Duncan Arnot Meyers and Nathan Lee Roberts, is fabulous. If you had a chance to grab the few bottles of the A-R Ogden Vineyards Cabernet and the A-R Beckstoffer Syrah that we featured earlier in the year, you will agree that these guys have the vineyard sources and the chops. Duncan is the assistant winemaker at Pax and has been mentored by John Kongsgaard. In fact, John assisted Duncan in making this Hudson Syrah. Nathan is a master cooper and makes all the barrels. This wine is dark and meaty, with fine tannins and a wonderfully smoky quality that you find with top-flight Cote Roties. 100 case production. | $65.00 | |
Corte Riva Petite Sirah Inaugural Petite release for Romel Rivera, the Assistant Winemaker for Pride Mtn and Switchback Ridge. Almost black in color, great mouthfeel, blackberries and chocolate. | $39.00 | |
Ethan Purisma Mountain Syrah The 2002 was delicious; a great wine at a great price, with a miniscule 100 case production. The Wine Spectator gave it 90 pts. The 2003 is a worthy successor with all of the brambly raspberry and blackberry characteristics, but dialed up in intensity. | $34.75 | |

Shadow Canyon York Mountain Syrah This winery owned by Gary Gibson is producing beautifully rendered Syrah and Grenache. Shadow Canyon is a hillside vineyard located on California's central coast. Planted solely to Syrah, this winery produces small lots of hand crafted wines that reflect the unique terroir of the York Mountain appellation. Situated close to the ocean at 1,500' elevation, cool fog and ocean air is drawn in from the coast at night and burns off in the morning. This cooling effect provides a longer growing season which lends intensity and character unique to coastal hillside vineyards. This vineyard has pedigree. Sine Qua Non sourced grapes from this vineyard for the 2002 For the Love of It bottling of Syrah that garnered 100 pts from Parker. Red Car also utilized 3 barrels of Syrah from the Shadow Canyon Vineyard in the making of the 2004 Red Wind. RP 91+ pts. | $38.75 | |

This wine is labelled Mason Dixon because the grapes come from Deux Vert Vineyard in the Northern Williamette Valley and Quail Run Vineyard in Southern Oregon in the Rogue Valley. Tannahill of Archery Summmit and Shea fame and Francis-Tannahill who shared winemaking duties at Chehalem are putting out a small amount of Pinot Noir and Syrah.
